How to Unleash Your Inner-Hemingway and Write Better

Writing is difficult. Regardless of how good you are, it is a skill we can always improve.

And what can make it even harder is editing your own work. This is why most people appreciate getting a fresh set of different eyes on an assignment or an important email. They provide a new perspective, and can tell you if the point you’re trying to convey to your audience is clear.

But sometimes we don’t have the luxury of an editor. We are under a deadline and we don’t have a person nearby to provide help. In the past, you had to do your best and edit carefully. And while this is still an important step, there is now an app that can assist you in this process – The Hemingway App (named after, of course, Earnest Hemingway).

Immediately below is a screenshot from the site. You’ll see that it assists in limiting passive voice, adverb usage, and the overuse of complex sentences. And underneath the first photo, you’ll see the first draft of this blogpost and the final product analyzed under the app.

With this app, the lower the grade the better. You’ll also see that I made a couple of sentences too clunky, and overdid it with the adverbs.

Final Draft:

While not perfect, it is much better than my first draft.

While not perfect, it is much better than my first draft.
